I am born

Saturday June 7th 2008 10:02PM -

Finally the time has come for me to announce that I have arrived in this world, in all my beautiful whole self without umbilical cords attached !

The story started on Friday night (June 6th). I slowly started nudging mom (read - minor contractions) and that resulted in giving her back pain. We had gone to Dr.Rashmi Acharya's clinic that evening for a routine check-up and the Doc mentioned something about low fluid level (5.5) and asked us to check back the next morning. So, Dad did the 40-minute drive again next morning with Grandma and Mom. This time the Doctor was not very pleased with Mom mentioning something about a very low fluid level (2.0) and asked Dad to take Mom right away to the Hospital.

So I heard this instruction and knew silently that the day had arrived. At 1:30 in the afternoon we "checked-in" to ward that had been given to us. I continued to give mom small contractions. But it seemed like the nurse in charge wasn't too happy with my pace as she gave Mom a little something (Oxytocin) that really set the pace for me. Mom's cervix was now dilated 3cms and my head was positioned at station -2. Things settled at this pace...Mom felt reasonable pain every 5 minutes although the pain was subdued by the pain-killer she was given. At 7pm in the evening, a new nurse came in. First thing she checked the Oxytocin flow level, wasn't too pleased and turned up the flow level. Things really picked up pace now. Mom was in pain...serious labor pain...I was really trying to push through and my head was in Station 0 by 8pm. I was really in a hurry to come out now...by 9:20pm I had reached Station 2. Mom was ready now to push. Problem was Dr.Acharya wasn't yet ready as she didn't expect Mom would move from 4 cms dilation to 10 cms dilation in 2 hours. So the nurse asked a really stupid question to Mom - do you want to wait until Dr.Acharya finished her operation and come over ? Mom was like "nooooooo...I need to push....NOW!". So the nurse asks Mom to lift her legs up and widen it...really wide.
At this point, my head is actually visible to the nurse and she is suprised...she thinks this might all be over in a few minutes. The in-house doc comes up and asks Mom to really push when her contraction comes up. So Mom goes like "eeeeeeeooooo...ah". Not much progress, another 2 pushes...still no luck. The doc takes a scissor and like a pro does a episciotomy. Now, I have a little more space to wriggle out. But even after couple of pushes, we dont make much progress. Now the Doc brings out the next trick in his bag, a vacuum pump. The Doc puts in the pump and clamps into my head..and in Mom's next push, pulls it out. Now we are almost there...I can almost feel the air outside, the chillness of it quite different from the warmth within my embryonic den. In the next push, I am out and dry in the open. I give out a final shreak...waaaah ! I see a whole lot of people outside running around like crazy.

37th week and the world upside down

So it is now week 37 and yesterday Mom and Dad were back to the doctors office yet again. Last week, they happily found that my head was turned down. Dad must have been thrilled about it because massaging mom's tummy downward was all that he was doing the last couple of weeks. Funny he needed to do that 'cos I already knew and performed my reverse-flip-in-the-belly act, a couple of weeks back.

So now I have to look downward and see what else I need to come up with to plan my exit to the world outside.

Doctor mentioned to Mom something about a 2cm dilation...whatever that means. There was a lot of talking between doc and Dad about "dates" and "delivery", which was suprising 'cos Dad usually only says "Hi doc" and keeps quiet. He only talks at the front-end counter with the doc's assistant about 5pm appointments.

Once they were back home, there was a lot of chatting between mom, dad, grandpas and grandmoms...Oh! I forget to mention...did you know both grandpas and grandmoms are here now. So much talking these days....its almost like there is a baby-shower function everyday. Dad's mom keeps saying to him "She will deliver any moment now. Make sure you have everything ready." Dad frantically moves around looking for anything that he might have missed for the "grand journey" to the hospital. The delivery-bag they were mentioning may turn out to be a delivery-truck or something !

So, I guess its only a matter of days for me to come out 'cos the Doctor was mentioning she might see us in the hospital next week rather than her clinic....who knows...maybe I might decide to enjoy my first vacation a little bit longer.

A busy shopping day

Saturday's are normally very predictable in our household. Mom and Dad wake up only by noon, then wash up and drive to some local Indian restaurant where I get spicy food down Mom's stomach and downwards to my embryonic sack. After that all of us doze off until evening when they watch some movie and go to bed again.

But today was different. They woke up earlier than usual and took bath in a hurry. Grandma and Grandpa had already taken bath by then, and all of us jumped into the car shortly after and drove to the local Mall. The first stop was very noisy, so I am thinking it must be Wal-Mart. We bought a lot of stuff for me here...clothes mostly and also a bathing tub for me. Dad and grandpa inspected the Car-Seat and stroller section but didn't find anything interesting. After an hour, everyone took a break sitting down and a few minutes later resumed shopping again. When we came out of the store, I heard Dad muttering 200 dollars over and over again to Mom....whatever that means.

We then went to Dosa Grill for lunch...Dad really loves this place...so does Mom...the food is not spicy like other places they go...so I generally coax Mom to take an extra serving of Veg.Biryani and Sambar rice in this place....I didn't need to do much coaxing today...Mom took enough pulav and naan-curry for me to consider skipping food for the rest of the day. Grandpa also seemed to be pleased with the food, what with the satisfying burps and grunts, which I only hear when he is extremely pleased with the food.

Next stop was nice and quiet....definitely Babies R Us. Grandma & Pa were excited...I heard them mention something about how this store was exclusively for babies stuff. Hmm...so whats the big deal...can't there be a store for just us babies....after all we must be the easiest consumer category for the store-guys...we dont get to choose what we really like...the adults do ! More clothes here. Dad and Grandpa inspected more car seats here and they finally found a couple of them interesting. They said they would check back later...what! Does that mean no stroller for me today ! Why can't they pick that lovely stroller the guy with the purple shirt (and an ever-lasting smirk in his face) was trying so hard to sell....seemed comfy enough for me...whatever.

Then we came back.....Grandma must have been really tired...I could hear her retire to bed right away. Mom and Dad were talking about the shopping for a while after which they also slept away.

My first post

"Hello to the world outside from Sreshta".

As technology is yet to come to speed, for now, Dad and Mom will be my messengers to post my thoughts and feelings on this blog. So here we go with some introductions.

Mom is now in her 34th week of pregnancy, which means in a few weeks from now, I will come out of my cozy den inside Mom's tummy to a whole new world outside I can't wait to see and explore.

These days I feel Mom massaging my head downwards as if she wants my head to move downwards. In a few seconds, Dad joins her eagerly in this exercise and both of them cajole me to shift my head downwards. I wonder why ! Will ask them once I check out of my den.

Otherwise, things are as cozy as ever. I heard Mom speaking something to Daddy today about coming early tomorrow for the Doctor's checkup. Hey ! thats great....they can hear my heart-beats through some sort of device at the doctor's office. I also get to talk direct-dilse to other kiddos in the doctors office. Its a well-guarded secret amongst us kiddos-in-moms-tummy about how we communicate directly with each other. Even Mom doesn't know about it.

Hey...forgot to tell about all that noise and buzz last Sunday....apparently it was some function called "Baby shower" in which Mom gets all the attention and I get all the noise. Neverthless, I was glad to hear some interesting sounds coming out of Mom's hands. Usually all I hear is her hand tapping something all day....but this time it was different...some kind of jingle sound which was very cool to hear. Have to ask Mom about this one as well once I am out....oh! so many things to ask her.

OK...I am kinda feeling sleepy with all this talk...time to doze off...Mom...can I get my daily course of milk/no-sugar please.
